How to Install the Allison 1000 C3 Pro-Series TorqKit 1999-2010

Components:

  • 6 pcs GPZ195 Friction Plates (0.071”)
  • 5 pcs 511642 Steel Reaction Plates (0.098”)
  • 1 pc 511643 Apply Plate (0.125”)
  • 1 pc 511003 P1 Ring Gear Spacer

Installation Instructions

Note: This Raybestos Pro Series TorqKit is for the professional transmission builder, and requires machining of the reaction surface (bottom side) of the backing plate to accommodate six friction plates for optimum performance and all standard thickness steels for optimum heat sink and durability.

1. Machine the OE backing plate to a thickness of 0.386”, removing material from the reaction side of the plate, and measuring thickness near the outer diameter or spline area.


2. Install the P1 ring gear spacer 511003 between the P1 planet carrier and P1 thrust washer.


3. Install C3 piston with orifice at 12 o’clock position. Lube seal surface and install evenly.

4. Assemble clutch in the following order (*TIP: Remove or do not install piston return springs on apply plate at this time):

  • 0.125” 511643 Apply Plate
  • 0.071” GPZ195 Friction Plate
  • 0.098” 511642 Steel Reaction Plate
  • 0.071” GPZ195 Friction Plate
  • 0.098” 511642 Steel Reaction Plate
  • 0.071” GPZ195 Friction Plate
  • 0.098” 511642 Steel Reaction Plate
  • 0.071” GPZ195 Friction Plate
  • 0.098” 511642 Steel Reaction Plate
  • 0.071” GPZ195 Friction Plate
  • 0.098” 511642 Steel Reaction Plate
  • 0.071” GPZ195 Friction Plate
  • Modified/Machined Backing Plate (0.386”)
  • Snap Ring

5. Check clutch clearance between C3 backing plate and top friction plate using a feeler gauge. *Recommended clearance range: 0.040”-0.060”.



6. Remove friction and steel components and saturate friction plates in either manufacturerspecified ATF or comparable synthetic ATF.


7. Confirm C3 piston orifice is located at the 12 o’clock position

8. If removed to confirm clearance in step 4, install piston return springs on 0.125” apply plate.



9. Install 0.125” apply plate with slot center over C3 piston orifice.



10. Using the steel slots as a guide, align the friction plate slots during assembly.

11. Align slots in steel reaction plates, ensuring slots do not block or partially block the C3 piston orifice. Note: You may need to index or flip the steel reaction plate over to accurately locate and center the slot at 12 o’clock.



*One method of keeping slots aligned is to use the P1 planet ring gear/C3 clutch hub.

a. Begin with a friction plate and index so the slot is at 12 o’clock.



b. Place a steel reaction plate with slot at 12 o’clock, and alternate until 6 friction plates and 5 steel reaction plates are on/over the P1 ring gear/C3 clutch hub.

c. Place the ring gear and clutch pack into the housing as an assembly (in the horizontal position), carefully aligning the steel plates to the case and keeping the 12 o’clock reference point in position.



12. Install the modified C3 backing plate and snap ring. The unit can now be rotated vertically to access the C4 clutch housing.
