The 5R110W transmission also known as "TorqShift" was first introduced as a diesel automatic transmission in 2003 behind the Ford 6.0L Power Stroke diesel engine and later paired with the 6.4L Power Stroke in 2008. While the 5R110W transmission may be known as a five-speed, it contains six forward gears. The shorter 4th gear is only used in temperatures below 5 degrees Fahrenheit to increase engine speeds, while the 5th gear is used in temperatures above 5 degrees Fahrenheit.
