The 8L90 transmission is an 8-speed longitudinal automatic transmission that was designed to shorten the steps between gears and improve fuel economy beyond the 6L80 and 6L90 transmissions. The 8L90 is found in GM high-horsepower vehicles highlighted by the Corvette and common daily driven vehicles like the Yukon and Silverado. The 8L90 transmission can be paddle shifted and features 4.56 1st gear ratio compared to a lesser 4.03 6L80 gear ratio. The 8L90 actually ways less than the Corvette 6L90 and fits the same space as the 6L80 and 6L90 despite the fact that it contains four gearsets and five clutches.
